What may be happening
The battery/charging light usually means the charging system isn't keeping voltage where it should be. That involves the alternator, the belt that drives it, and the connections and battery. A battery light does not prove the alternator has failed.
Common symptoms
- Battery-shaped light on the dash
- Possible dimming lights
- May eventually stall if the battery drains
Safe observations — not diagnostic tests
You can safely notice what the vehicle does, sounds like, displays, smells like, or visibly leaks. These are observations, not professional test procedures.
- Whether headlights dim at idle
- Any belt squeal
- Whether the light is steady or flickering
Common and overlapping possibilities
- Alternator output
- Belt condition or tension
- Battery condition or cable voltage drop
What not to do
- Don't assume it's the alternator and replace it
- Don't keep driving far if lights are dimming
