What may be happening
A click is the sound of a relay or the starter solenoid trying to engage. One solid click and rapid clicking can both point toward whether enough power is reaching the starter — but a click alone doesn't confirm a bad battery or a bad starter.

Safe observations — not diagnostic tests
You can safely notice what the vehicle does, sounds like, displays, smells like, or visibly leaks. These are observations, not professional test procedures.
- Whether the clicking is one click or many
- How bright the dash lights and headlights are
- Whether a jump start changed the behavior

- Weak battery or poor state of charge
- Corroded or loose cable connections
- Starter or solenoid
- Charging system undercharging the battery
What not to do
- Don't crank repeatedly
- Don't buy a starter or battery without testing first
When professional testing is needed
Testing measures whether the battery, connections and charging system can actually deliver the current the starter needs, and whether the starter is drawing correctly.
